E-SPEAIT Week 4

Information Society Report to the Parliament of Finland by Pekka Himanen is analysing the development of information society , how it has been and how it could be improved. I chose a few points that I think are important and added whether I think these topics have improved. First I would like to bring out that the report talks about management and work culture in a creative society. That companies have to provide space for creativity. This seems to be well adapted by companies and especially todays tech firms. For example companies have fitted comfortable rooms and ping pong tables for taking breaks. Sometimes you just need to step away from your work and you might get an idea while doing something different for a change. Working straight from eight to five can be exhausting and I often imagine it as a grey picture. But having some freedom can really add colour to that. Secondly I want to bring out how the report mentions how important is high-quality education and training system.

Wikis are a create tool for collaboration and active learning. People who have access to it can also edit and add their own knowledge. Like Wikipedia, global crowd sourced encyclopedia. If you want to create a wiki and are afraid that some stranger might edit the content and delete or alter the information, it is possible to have private wikis. Only giving access to chosen people. But why would you want a wiki and how can it be useful? Wiki is great to collect information from different people and have it all stored in one place. I have seen a simple explanation for why Wikis are wonderful tool, and it is as follows. Four friends want to go for a camping trip, and they are planning it at their homes behind a computer. When sending emails back and forth, it is going to get clustered pretty quick and it becomes a headache to find certain information. So, they create a wiki page that they all can edit. When planning what supplies to bring along they can all add things into the wiki p

E-SPEAIT Week 2

Now that the Internet is so widely used and easily accessed, we have a lot of information on our devices. But even before getting answers to every question from Google, people needed to find other people or get some knowledge about something. What seems to be completely disappeared are phone books. Not really a technology as such, but something that was made obsolete by technological advancements. Although some still exist in digital form, but we don't see them in physical form anymore. When smartphones came into play some communities like Seattle and San Francisco banned phone books, because they were labeled as unwanted and harmful for the environment. Phone books were/are essentially a collection of people together with their phone number and postal or street address. They were also used by businesses and even paid extra for better advertisements. Another service, which in my opinion is quite similar is a helpline you can call. Like a Google search engine but via phone call. Pop

E-SPEAIT Andre week 1

There have been many great ideas that seem like they could make your life more convenient. A lot of them have, but there are also projects that the public is not that accepting of. Here I am giving a short overview   of three Google’s not so successful projects Firstly, an idea that seemed like straight out of a movie. AR glasses/smart glasses. For example Google Glass, which was released 2013 as a prototype and a year later as a product for public. The idea of using voice commands and gestures to control what is in front of your eyes was amazing. It is a good idea, but is it actually needed? Some professions might benefit from having certain applications in front of them at all times, but I feel like a regular person is not getting much out of it. It just looks cool. I would not say that the idea as a whole is a failure, but Google Glass was introduced at the wrong time. One of the reasons Google Glass did not do well was because of its camera. Privacy concerns were raised because
